Text Natural Resource Allocation

Provisions relating to the allocation of natural resources have been clarified by the Resource Management Amendment Act 2005. Resources dealt with include:

  • Space in the coastal marine area

  • Water, heat and energy from water

  • Heat and energy from material surrounding geothermal water

  • The capacity of air or water to assimilate the discharge of a contaminant

  • Open coastal water

  • Heat or energy from open coastal water.

    • These provisions will give direction to consent authorities dealing with problems of allocating finite resources, and trying to balance the rights of existing consent holders with the desire of 'new entrants' to gain access to them.

    More detail is now given in the Act regarding transfer of water and discharge permits.
