The purpose of the NZ Coastal Policy Statement is to achieve sustainable management of the coastal environment. It is a statement of nationwide policies that guides the development of regional policies, regional coastal plans, and the provisions of district plans that relate to the coastal environment. Sections 56-58 of the RMA outline requirements for the NZCPS. The current coastal policy statement has now been in place for 10 years. An independent assessment was recently commissioned by the Department of Conservation. The assessment was a review of the effectiveness of the NZCPS. A decision has not yet been made as to whether the entire NZCPS should be reviewed. More information on this can be found on the DOC website.
