Group's focus
Promotes protection of New Zealand's historic places. Has a statutory responsibility to promote identification, preservation, and conservation of historic and cultural heritage. HPT manages the national register of historic places. Controls authorities to modify archaeological sites. Heritage planning and conservation advice to local authorities concerning Historic Places listed in district plans. Maori Heritage Council within HPT promotes protection of waahi tapu and historic areas significant to Maori. Administers Historic Places Act 1993. Quarterly magazine 'Heritage new Zealand'. Regional offices, branches throughout New Zealand.
